Medical Affairs — Shaping the Future of Pharma and Biotech 9 Oct 2024

Medical Affairs (MA) is increasingly becoming a key player in pharmaceutical and biotechnology organisations, standing alongside Research & Development (R&D) and commercial operations. Traditionally viewed as a support function, MA now plays a crucial role in shaping corporate strategy by integrating scientific expertise, patient insights, and clinical data into decision-making processes.

This shift mirrors the growing complexity of healthcare treatments, the rise of real-world evidence, and the need for collaboration across various departments to drive successful product development and enhance patient outcomes.

Driving Change Through Evidence and Data

One of the main factors behind MA’s transformation is its role in generating and sharing clinical evidence. With a heightened focus on data analytics, MA teams are well-equipped to meet stakeholders’ demands for real-world evidence and detailed clinical trial data. By utilising advanced analytics and artificial intelligence (AI), MA can offer deeper insights into how products perform throughout their lifecycle. This information not only informs R&D decisions but also shapes market strategies, ensuring that therapies are both effective and aligned with market needs.

 Embracing Digital Engagement

The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the adoption of digital technologies and omnichannel engagement within MA. With fewer face-to-face meetings, MA has shifted to virtual interactions and digital communications with healthcare providers (HCPs) and key opinion leaders (KOLs). This transition has enabled more personalised and data-driven engagements, making MA indispensable in maintaining strong customer relationships and ensuring that therapies are effectively communicated and utilised.

 Key Trends Transforming Medical Affairs

 1. Increased Demand for Data

Healthcare providers and payers now seek comprehensive analyses of clinical trial outcomes, real-world data (RWD), and patient results to understand treatment benefits over time.

MA teams are enhancing their data analytics capabilities to efficiently create and share scientific evidence. The focus is on addressing the most critical evidence questions rather than attempting to respond to every inquiry globally. Additionally, MA is exploring new ways to present information, such as through social media, videos, and other digital formats beyond traditional journals.

 2. Omnichannel Engagement

The pandemic led to a lasting increase in virtual interactions and digital communication with HCPs. Today, about half of all interactions are conducted online, a trend expected to remain steady.

Sixty-five percent of MA teams have adopted digital tools to support their omnichannel strategies. Effective use of data analysis, Customer Relationship Management (CRM) systems, adaptable content, and personalisation tools ensures consistent and engaging interactions across different platforms.

 3. Centralisation and Automation of Digital Capabilities

Many organisations are centralising and automating MA operations, such as managing medical inquiries and creating content. This approach reduces duplicate work and improves efficiency.

A recent Deloitte study found that around 80% of companies manage medical inquiries using a globally standardised system, with an additional 25% moving towards centralisation. Adopting global content management strategies ensures consistency across the organisation, while local teams can adjust content as needed to comply with specific regulations or business requirements.

 The Future of Medical Affairs

MA plays a vital role in collecting and analysing insights from HCPs, patients, caregivers, and payers. These insights help identify unmet medical needs and guide strategic decisions. Advanced data analysis and AI assist in selecting the right messages, communication channels, and content formats.

Leaders expect MA to continue expanding its strategic influence both externally with stakeholders and internally within organisations, making MA even more important to overall business strategy.
