UK government launches Science and Technology Framework 16 Mar 2023
As part of its plan to make the UK a science and technology superpower by 2030, the government launched its ‘Science and Technology Framework’ on 6 March 2023.
The focus of the framework will be on 10 points: identifying critical technologies; signalling the UK’s strengths and ambitions; investment in R&D; talent and skills; financing innovative science and technology companies; procurement; international opportunities; access to physical and digital infrastructure; regulation and standards, plus an innovative public sector.
Each of these will have a clear action plan by summer 2023, with delivery overseen by the National Science and Technology Council.
The first projects under the new framework include £250 million for AI, quantum technologies and engineering biology, a further £50 million for World Class Labs funding to improve facilities, as well as £10 million more for the UK Innovation and Science Seed Fund (bringing the total seed fund commitment to £50 million), to support the UK’s tech and science start-ups.
