NIHR and MRC launch UK Rare Disease Research Platform 13 Jul 2023
The National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) and the Medical Research Council (MRC) are investing £14 million in a new research programme to investigate challenges in the diagnosis, management and treatment of rare diseases.
The UK Rare Disease Research Platform will receive the funding over the next five years. The money will be used to unite researchers, patients, stakeholders and technologies to improve rare disease research and outcomes.
This initiative is part of the wider NIHR investment in rare disease research that was promised in the Rare Disease Action Plan for England, which was announced in February 2023.
The Platform comprises a central coordinating hub connecting a network of 11 expert groups based at universities across the country. It will provide a point of entry for industry and international partners and work proactively to bring people, technologies and tools together to solve rare disease challenges.
