ABPI report highlights skills gaps 12 Jun 2023
A report by the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPI) shows an ongoing need for AI, digital and data talent to support innovative drug discovery and development. The report, ‘Evolution of an innovation-based biopharmaceutical industry’, published on 8 June 2023, is updated every two years and investigates the latest trends and skills requirements for the life sciences industry in the UK.
Survey data from 30 employers suggests that, while previous gaps in areas like formulation science and pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamics modelling have improved, challenges remain in filling roles in biomedical imaging, bioinformatics and computational chemistry/science.
The application of scientific, mathematical and digital knowledge is a problem with new recruits, according to 57% of respondents, compared to 38% in 2021.
The industry is increasingly using apprenticeships and other forms of training to fill skills gaps, with 44% of respondents stating that they are taking more apprentices than four years ago. The number of graduates being recruited has also increased compared to four years ago and the report suggests support for relevant courses must continue to ensure a relevant talent pipeline for the sector.
